In June, 2000 the United Nations General Assembly called for a special session called “Women 2000 : Gender Equality, Development and Peace for the twenty-first century”. This is often referred to as “Beijing Plus 5” as it was where governments reported on and evaluated how their countries were progressing towards achieving the objectives of the Beijing Platform for Action five years after its inception.
The outcomes document from this meeting “Further Actions and Initiatives to implement the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action” was adopted.
This document recognised that the goals set and commitments made in the BPFA had not been fully achieved and implemented. It presents further actions and initiatives at the local, national, regional and international levels to accelerate the BPFA and to ensure that commitments for gender equality, development and peace are fully realised.
