The UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD or ‘Rio+20’) will take place June 4-6, 2012, in Rio de Janeiro, 20 years after the historic Earth Summit. Women’s participation in the process and input on the themes and objective are crucial to a successful outcome.

The Women’s Major Group/Rio+20 Steering Committee is facilitating ways to make the links among the many women, men, organizations and movements from all corners of the world taking action for a gender-responsive Rio+20.

The WMG Rio+20 Steering Committee is coordinating women’s input to the official UN process and has started a drafting process.Wide input from the diverse women’s global community is needed to refine the global women’s position and input in the Rio+20 draft text. All discussions and activity generated from the above tools will inform the official input of the Women’s Major Group/Rio+20 Steering Committee into the Zero Draft document (due November 1st). But that’s coming up soon so only responses received by October 25 will be considered in the WMG submission; the survey will remain open throughout 2011.

What happens after November 1st?
Although inputs to be incorporated into the Zero Draft document for UNCSD meeting will have been submitted, the work to advocate, organize, share and lead towards a momentous outcome at Rio+20 and a more sustainable future beyond that will have only just begun!
