Vale Josefa “Gigi” Francisco (1954 – 2015)
It is with a heavy heart that I mourn the passing of Josefa “Gigi” Francisco a prominent feminist, women’s rights activist, mentor and friend. Vale Gigi a wonderful women, a fierce feminist, a progressive women’s rights activist, an ally, mentor and friend. You will be missed.
Up to the very end, Gigi was supporting fellow activists in DAWN through the intricate challenges of pushing a progressive women’s rights agenda through the UN regional and international processes. There will be many accolades written and spoken of Gigi, and I can only add my own personal voice to these.
I have to admit that when I first met Gigi in 1999 she was a key member of Development Alternatives for Women in the New Era (DAWN), a key Asia Pacific network based in the South for women of the South, and I was an international development student at the University of New South Wales. From 2008 – 2014 Gigi was the global coordinator for DAWN, and over the years I have had the opportunity to work with her on a number of issues.
Gigi’s sharp intellect , clear and informed opinions and the ability to engage in any discussions made her very easy to respect and admire. Having had the opportunity to work more closely with Gigi over the last few years she became a friend and mentor and was always available for advice and support.
As tears form in my eyes for the loss of a friend, I join with others to celebrate her life and achievements with the many others who fell under her light and send strength, love and deep condolences to her family and friends. Rest in Love Gigi rest in love…
